The Mustang exploded onto the American performance scene in 1964, but the fastback gave Ford's new pony car the shape that would become legend. Just 77,079 fastbacks were produced for 1965, compared with 410,260 hardtops, making this the considerably less common and more performance-oriented body style. This unfinished Pro Touring build takes that coveted foundation and rewrites the mechanical playbook with modern muscle.
Under the hood is a 5.0-liter Coyote V8 backed by a Tremec TKO600 five-speed manual transmission and Wilwood hydraulic clutch system. Ceramic-coated long-tube headers, an Aeromotive fuel system, serpentine belt drive, Power By The Hour alternator relocation, aluminum radiator with electric fan, and trunk-mounted Optima battery give the powertrain a serious performance foundation.
The chassis has received equally substantial attention. Heidts Mustang II front suspension, tubular control arms, a front sway bar, electric power steering, four-link rear suspension, coilovers, and a Ford 9-inch rear end bring modern road manners to the classic fastback platform. Wilwood four-wheel disc brakes with tandem master cylinders provide stopping power, while Magnum 500 wheels preserve the Mustang's unmistakable vintage attitude.
Inside, black vinyl bucket seats and the Deluxe Pony interior keep the cabin rooted in 1965. Dakota Digital VHX gauges, a Hurst floor shifter, woodgrain steering wheel, tilt column, RetroSound radio, and Vintage Air underdash heat and air conditioning add modern usability without stripping away the period character. A billet gas cap supplies another clean finishing touch.
Currently wearing primer and needing final bodywork and paint, this Mustang is an honest unfinished project with many of the expensive performance components already in place. Finish it in a factory-inspired color, lay down something wild, or keep the raw shop-built attitude. The hard decisions have been made. Now it needs someone with the vision to carry it across the finish line.
